There was tension in Abia State as soldiers laid siege to the Afaraukwu Nigeria soldier’s country home of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and clashed with members of his group leading to the alleged death of 28 persons and several people injured . It was learnt that the soldiers arrived in the community barely 48 hours and lay ambush at his house. The soldiers came with about 10 armoured personnel carriers and seven Hilux vans caused panic in the area, forcing shop owners to close immediately. Some of the soldiers also invaded the Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Aba Road, Umuahia, and destroyed laptops and other valuables. On the 14, September 2017, Truckloads of IPOB members headed for Afaraukwu apparently to show solidarity to Kanu. Some members of the group moving into Umuahia were allegedly confronted at Nnamdi Kalu house by soldiers.

Some of the trucks conveying IPOB members waving the Biafra flags were seen at the leaders house. What started like a drama of sort at the Isialangwa junction in Abia later snowballed into a major crisis that claimed lives and injuries. We learnt that at least 10 trucks were burnt with over 28 dead bodies lying at Nnamdi Kalu house. It was learnt that the majority of those who died were either felled by bullets allegedly fired by soldiers or hit by other objects while trying to escape.

It was due to this incident that an active member from Enugu branch Mr. Mmaduabuchi Fred Was killed by the Nigeria army, who happen to be among those going to show solidarity to Mr. Nnamdi Kalu. Mr. Mmaduabuchi Fred a native of Imama village in Mgbowo community in Awgu local government area of Enugu state. On hearing the sad story of the incident by his family members, his son Mmaduabuchi Chibuzor Beneth who happens to be an active member of IPOB under the tutorship of his father, took laws into his hands by mobilizing a group of people mostly youth to attack police stations and army barracks, burning down government properties and attacking the police and army Personnel which led to lost of lives and properties in the Mgbowo community.

This action carried out by Mr. Mmaduabuchi Chibuzor Beneth and his group back fired, leading to military attack in his communities killing and arresting some youth, and this action led to the death of his sister by name Adaora and Mmaduabuchi Chibuzor Beneth missing. According to some eye witness interviewed “it was discovered that Mr. Mmaduabuchi son by name Chibuzor ran into tin air, immediately he heard about the invasion of Mgbowo community by the military men, declaring him wanted, but the information got to him early and he ran into hiding till date, because the police and military sworn to kill him as soon as he is found”.
